The average North American spends more than seven hours a day on their phone, a handheld portal that connects us, informs us, and increasingly, entertains us. At the same time, romance storytelling is experiencing a powerful resurgence. From the renewed popularity of romance novels to the global success of screen adaptations like Heated Rivalry, audiences are clearly hungry for emotionally driven, binge-worthy stories. And there’s no better format to meet viewers where they already are than vertical, short-form streaming.
Enter the next evolution of romance storytelling.
Archipelago partnered with leading short-form video platform ReelShort to produce the French-language adaptation of their most successful series, Breaking the Ice. With the original series amassing tens of millions of views, the goal was clear: expand the franchise’s reach by connecting with new audiences through language and culturally resonant storytelling. Très bien, indeed.
Working closely with the ReelShort team, Archipelago delivered end-to-end production services for the series. Overseeing script translation, casting, scheduling, location sourcing, equipment and crew management, picture editing, and poster creation. Every element was designed to preserve the emotional intensity that made the original series a hit, while ensuring the adaptation felt authentic and accessible to French-speaking viewers.
Over the course of 10 shoot days, our cast and crew captured more than 90 minutes of scripted content, often filming up to 16 pages per day. Guided by a bilingual director Jana Stackhouse, performances were carefully shaped to deliver the heightened emotion and dramatic pacing that define the genre. The feature-length narrative required a range of locations from ice rinks to cafés, all made possible through partnerships with local businesses. Additional sets, including a kitchen, bedroom, and disco, were brought to life using Archipelago’s Studio, allowing for efficiency, cost-savings, and creative flexibility.
Bébé Secret Avec Mon Ex Star Du Hockey premiered on the ReelShort app in 2025 and quickly found its audience, with viewers binge-watching the series and eagerly calling for more. The project’s success was driven by a nimble, platform-first approach rooted in an understanding of genre, audience behavior, and the unique demands of vertical storytelling. Short-form vertical dramas aren’t a trend, they’re a growing pillar of modern entertainment. And Archipelago is proud to be helping shape what comes next.
