This winter we had the opportunity to film a live musical session with Toronto-based artist, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist LOKRE, in our studio. Her powerful performance included five songs from her debut album, ELIZABETH, an exploration of self, deeply rooted in ancestral guidance. The videos feature a spoken word poem accompanying each track that introduces themes identified by the tracks themselves. One poem entitled "Ancient Hands" resonated with audiences and has become a viral sensation garnering over 1.2 million views on TikTok alone. Previously we have partnered with LOKRE on a series for Jack.org in which she hosted conversations around self-care, mindfulness, and personal growth, and we were thrilled to have her back in our studio.
Dynamic Cinematography for a Dynamic Performance
LOKRE’s captivating performance was supported by Adrian X on guitar, Percussion by David Gouveia, cello by Jill Sourteig and Background Vocals by SABRE & LAII. Our objective was to capture the music in a way that matched the intimate and stripped down nature of the session. We used four cameras to capture all angles of the performance and incorporated both our jib and slider to achieve fluid camera movements that were guided by the rhythm and melody of the music. It also allowed us to let the musical performance playout and find those intimate moments of emotion in close ups, while the wide shots allowed viewers to see the connection between the musicians. We want to bring the audience into LOKRE’s world and evoke the feelings one would get if they were there in the front row.
Transforming Our Studio
Our goal was to unify the vibe of the performance and the design of the space. Our studio leant itself as the perfect backdrop, incorporating raw elements with restrained decor. We took advantage of the rustic wood floors and our bright loft studio, while incorporating elements of nature through minimalist plantlife to keep the focus on the music and the performers. Our top priority is that each artist felt comfortable in the space and harmonious with the environment around them.
